Edward Thomas Dade, mason
Edward Thomas "Sonny" Dade (also known as "Slick"), son of the late Lorraine and Katie Thomas Dade of Middleburg, died Sept. 2 at his home in Middleburg. He was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Purcellville, one of five children, all of whom have preceded him in death: Charlotte Tracy, Avis Abston, Lorraine Jr., and Theodore.
He attended St. Paul Normal and Industrial School in Lawrenceville, Va., obtaining a trade school certificate in masonry in May 1939. On June 22, 1943, he married Helen Roberts of Leesburg, who preceded him in death.
In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Africa, Italy and France until his discharge in 1945.
Mr. Dade worked as a brick mason and helped build the new wing on the old Loudoun Hospital on Cornwall Street when he worked for W.N. Hall & Sons. Later, he and Jack Turner of Middleburg formed Dade and Turner Contracting Company. He also worked for various contractors around the Middleburg area as a stone and brick mason. His stone mason work was so good that he even explained the process of stonelaying to an inquisitive woman who stopped her car to inquire about it, not knowing that he was giving a mini lesson to Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
Survivors include extended family.
Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Royston Funeral Home, Middleburg, wieht interment at Solon Cemetery, Middleburg.
