MOVIE REVIEW: 'This Means War'

I did not have high expectations going into “This Means War." I thought that it would be a cliché plot with some scenes that made you chuckle. Boy, was I wrong. It was difficult hearing the dialogue between characters because the audience was laughing so hard.

“This Means War” is hilarious but parts of the story are disorganized and far-fetched.

“This Means War” is about Agent FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Agent Tuck (Tom Hardy) and how they start dating Lauren Scott (Reese Witherspoon). Tuck meets Lauren in an online dating service. Tuck’s partner and friend, FDR, meets Lauren without realizing that she is Tuck’s new girlfriend and uses his slick moves to get her to go out with him.

FDR and Tuck soon realize they are dating the same woman. This leads to them continuously sabotaging each other on dates in increasingly clever ways. The subplot involves a terrorist seeking revenge for the death of his brother.

What is enjoyable about “This Means War” is the chemistry between Hardy, Pine, and Witherspoon. They work together flawlessly and play believable characters. Pine and Hardy could be brothers. In the film, they express how much they care about each other on a number of occasions. This emotion between the characters makes the competition for Lauren feel more like a sibling rivalry than a chance for true love.

It is also nice to see a change in the traditional romantic comedy. This theme is present in the film but it is overshadowed by the comedy and action. For this reason, “This Means War” is not a romantic comedy, but an action comedy with a healthy side of romance.

Director McG (“Terminator: Salvation”) made the right choice by focusing more on the plot involving Lauren. This is because the subplot involving the terrorist is confusing and vague. When the terrorist subplot is compared to the subplot of “True Lies” (1994), it is subpar.

If McG could have expounded more on the subplot, then this film would receive a higher rating.

I would recommend “This Means War” to anyone who is looking for a fun time at the movies. Be warned though: this film is rife with sexual innuendo and other material that parents may find inappropriate.

“This Means War” will please anyone who is looking to laugh.
