As Sept. 11 nears, region looks back

Ten years ago, the entire world changed in the space of a few hours.

In Prince William, two memorial events are planned this weekend in commemoration of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

At 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, the official county ceremony will be held at the Liberty Memorial outside the McCoart Building at 1 County Complex Court off the Prince William Parkway.

The Liberty Memorial is the county's monument to the terrorist attacks and features a pentagon-shaped pool surrounding two pillared fountains of water. The design incorporates Pennsylvania granite and a damaged brick from the Pentagon. Pieces of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center will be incorporated in the coming years.

At the ceremony, the Prince William Community Band will perform a prelude and the National Anthem will be performed by the New Dominion Choraliers.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart will speak, as will Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton, who was chairman of the Prince William board when the memorial was constructed.

In addition, Laurie Laychak and Brenda Lynch, the widows of two of the county's 22 victims, will also speak at the ceremony, said county spokesperson Patty Prince.

“It's Brenda's flag pole standing at the memorial,” Prince said on Tuesday. “It was her husband's and when he died, she had it brought here so she could visit them both.”

James T. Lynch Jr. and David W. Laychak were among the county's 19 soldiers and civilians who died at the Pentagon.

Three others, Gene E. Maloy,

Craig J. Miller and Jeff L. Simpson, died at the World Trade Center. Prince said all three just happened to be visiting New York on Sept. 11. Simpson, a volunteer firefighter, was not in the World Trade Center when the planes hit but ran in to help rescue others.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony. Call 703-792-6600 for details.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Life Church and Asaph Dance Ensemble of Manassas are hosting city-wide Worship Night at 6 p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.

The event combines prayer, contemporary Christian worship music and classical ballet. The event is free but seating is limited and tickets are required.

For tickets, go to www.welovechurch.com or call 703-584-4494 for information.
