BHS spring sports teams claim eight district titles

It's been a monumental spring season for Battlefield High School this year as eight out of 10 of its sports programs racked up Cedar Run District titles.

The baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys and girls lacrosse and boys and girls outdoor track teams all came away with district titles of some sort this year.

Some were predictable based on history, such as previous state contenders such as the softball and girls soccer teams, while the baseball one came after a sub-.500 season and an offseason filled with turmoil that led to a coaching change.

A look at the records show that Battlefield’s titles did not come simply by happen-stance. The school’s sports victories tended to be one-sided affairs throughout the regular season.

The biggest turnaround this year for any of the BHS program goes to the baseball team. At 15-4 overall with a district mark of 7-1, Bobcats captured its first-ever regular season title after previously claiming district and regional tournament wins.

Battlefield’s remarkable about-face under the guidance of rookie manager Jay Burkhart came through a combination of superior pitching from hurlers like John Williams and Nate Abel and consistent clutch hitting.

Williams, Dillon Porterfield, Derek Evan and Zach Harris all drove in more than 20 runs this season while Evans, Harris and Williams each popped at least four home runs.

The Bobcats’ offense posted double-digits on the scoreboard eight times during the regular season, including four out of the final five games. The defense, in turn, earned five shut-out victories.

Battlefield entered the post-season winners of eight out of nine games, having outscored its opponents 79-30 over that stretch.

In a different manner of matching and then beating expectations, the girls soccer team went undefeated with a 14-0-1 record, only tying Forest Park on March 29 while routing the rest of the competition by a combined 76-7.

That included 10 shutouts.

Only Osbourn on May 12 managed to score more than one goal against Battlefield during a 5-2 loss.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats sent Colleen Gawkins, Taylor Kerxton, Tessa Klumpp, Aly Shaughnessy, Kelsey Trace, Sammie Trone and Alexa Wagoner to the all-district first-team with special recognition going to Shaughnessy for earning Player of the Year status. Lexie Jones, Karina Lacey, Tara Rotante and Sydney Sisk all made it to the second-team.

In all, 11 members of the Bobcats' roster ended up taking home all-district honors. The girls also have seven seniors who have already committed to play in college.

Nearly matching the soccer team in terms of lopsided success are the softball and boys lacrosse squads. The softball team exited the regular season 18-1 overall while the lacrosse squad accumulated a 12-1 regular season mark.

Battlefield's softball pitching duo of ace Miranda Kemp and No. 2 pitcher Bailey Liddle displayed "total dominance" during the regular season, according to head coach Joe Schelzo, with a combined ERA of a scant 0.53.

Kemp (11-1, 0.53 ERA, 1 perfect game, 2 no-hitters) and Liddle (7-0, 0.17 ERA) struck out a combined 178 batters while allowing only 22 runs on 39 hits, nine of which were earned. By contrast, the BHS offense tallied 160 runs on 181 hits.

Schelzo credited catcher Stephanie Figgins with having a "good rapport with both of them" while exhibiting "good knowledge" via her pitch-calling behind the plate for both Liddle and Kemp.

"I’d put either one of them up against virtually any pitcher in the state," said Schelzo, whose team entered the post-season on a 17-game winning streak.

He stressed throughout the year that his whole line-up could hit and he has proof in the numbers: nine players hit at or above .300 this season, with Liddle (.528), Kimmy Brady (.429), Katherine Palmer (.411) and Katie Sutphin (.396) leading the way.

Liddle, Brady and Erika McLaughlin each clubbed three homeruns while Sutphin knocked in another two. Brady also easily earned the title as the team’s clutch slugger with a team-leading 29 RBIs.

Following a 9-6 victory against Douglas Freeman in the first round of regions on Monday, boys lacrosse coach Kevin Marsh credited his team's fastbreak offense for Battlefield being able to apply adequate pressure on defenses.

"I think what we've been good at all year is winning the transition. And so we're excellent at getting quick goals off the turnovers," said Marsh. "What we're trying to get better at every single day out now is it's also being able to work the ball around and grind out, you know, goals after wearing them down."

Jon Hanlon, Sam McCain and Tyler Gleen each had two goals against the Rebels while Corey Schumacher and Ryan Swingle chipped in one a piece. Schumacher also helped out with two assists while McCain, Cameron Maples and Zak Goings each had one.

"We like to be deceptive with four middies at a time. We like a little bit of confusion too," said Hanlon about the offense. "There's a method to the madness."

Goalie Connor Mullins counted seven saves against Douglas Freeman, including five in the second half, which ultimately proved to be the difference maker for the Bobcats (14-2 overall).

The win marked the 100th of Marsh’s tenure with Battlefield and came three days after Stonewall Jackson upset BHS for the district tournament title.

"I think our guys expected to win and I think that's part of the reason that we lost to Stonewall," said Marsh. "All of these other teams are looking to us and fighting to get better and we've gotten a little bit complacent; just expecting to win instead of fighting every day to get better."

A similar fate struck the girls lacrosse team, which won the regular season crown with a regular season record of 10-3, including a perfect 8-0 showing in the district.

Battlefield defeated Loudoun Valley twice prior to the tournament, a first in program history, only to lose 12-11 in the tournament championship.

"Starting with I guess I think it was probably the second Valley game, we really focused on draw control more. That's been one of our main focuses the second half of the season," said BHS goalie Caitlin Hester after her team pounded Douglas Freeman 17-4 right before the boys’ game.

Hester mentioned Allie Rash, Sara Jacobson and Mary Margaret McCaleb as being particular potent on offense this season with extra help on draw controls also coming from Laura Szcyrba.

As for Hester and her eight fellow seniors on the team, the momentum built up from a record-breaking regular season is all aimed at making it to the big dance.

"I think it's going to be the exclamation point, honestly," she said. "Fireworks. (We’re) trying to make it all the way to states and just leave everything out there."
