'The Roar' wins national honors
Top of the state is one thing; but top of the nation?
The Brenstville District High School newspaper staff is riding high this week after earning just that designation.
School officials received word earlier this month that the student newspaper, “The Roar,” has won the highest possible rating from the American Scholastic Press Association.
“The Roar” was awarded the designation"First Place with Special Merit," in a competition that included hundreds of student newspapers, magazines and yearbooks from high schools and colleges around the country.
Jeff Reed, the newspaper advisor, explained on Tuesday that each publication is awarded points out of 1,000 for page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, cover design, advertising placement, photography and other items.
Schools are awarded a first, second or third-place prize based on their total points. Publications that have “special and outstanding design and content” may also earn a “Special Merit” designation.
And that's what Reed's staff received with their 955-point tally.
“'First Place with Special Merit' is the highest,” Reed said.
Asked whether it meant his students had beaten out college papers, he said the contest isn't really meant to be a competition against other schools as much as a competition against a point scale.
“But yes, we beat them,” he added.
Reed, a sociology, American history and journalism teacher, has been at Brentsville for six years and has run “The Roar” for four. In that time, the paper has won numerous awards from the Virginia High School League but the staff has never entered a national competition before.
Given this year's top showing, will they be back to nationals next year?
“I would say 'Absolutely,'” Reed said.
“The Roar” staff includes: editor-in-chief Katie Redmiles, managing editor Nicole Penn,
news editor Katherine Bailey, features editor, Mike Thompson, campus life editor Emily Goodrich, sports editor Nicole Whewell, viewpoint editor Kelsey Everard, business manager Carleigh Stiehm and staffers Annamaria Bassi, Evelyn Beil, Kathryn Bell, Charelle Berry, Blake Cash, Ambica Chopra, Caroline Desmedt, David Fall, Erin Grasse, Tori Holler, Aisha Kamara, Jannis Lim, Emily Martin, Amanda Navarro, Sophie Penn, Kara Tansill, Katie Wonders and Sarah Wu.
