Tiger girls continue improvement at states, finish 9th

While the Brentsville District boys swimming team captured its second consecutive Group AA state title over the weekend, the girls team put up its all-time best showing with a ninth-place finish that included two silvers from Nicole Haynes.

Brentsville tallied 104 points on the day, coming in 113 behind first-place Western Albemarle. The Tigers improved on its 11th-place showing in 2010, which was a six-spot jump from 2009.

Though Haynes won gold last year in the 100 yard backstroke (58.12 seconds), her nearly-identical timing this year (58.20) put her less than one second behind event winner Kacy Edsall of Waynesboro. Haynes first came in second place earlier in the day in the 100 yard freestyle (53.53).

She also led the 200 yard medley relay team, which included Amy Tansill, Kara Tansill and Annalee Gallagher, to eighth place. Kara Tansill earned a No. 8 spot of her own in the 100 yard backstroke and checked in 14th in the 200 yard individual medley.

Amy Tansill also earned seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:08.20) and Katie O’Connell came in sixth in the 50 yard freestyle (25.21). Victoria Barley also had a stand-out performance with a ninth-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.74).

Haynes, who has signed on to swim at North Carolina State University, is "pretty well progressed in her swimming career," according to Brentsville coach Ashleigh Krzywicki. "She went into this wanting to win both events… She just got out-touched."
