Stewart confirms he'll seek re-election
It was not exactly an unexpected announcement but what it lacked in surprise, it made up for in fanfare. On Tuesday, Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart (R) announced that he'll seek another term as head of the county's government.
Stewart made his announcement surrounded by virtually every Republican in the county, including all of the GOP supervisors, Circuit Court Clerk Michelle McQuigg, Sheriff Glen Hill and Del. Rich Anderson.
Dumfries Supervisor Maureen Caddigan lauded Stewart for his “honesty” and “straightforwardness” during his tenure as chairman.
“We need him,” she said.
For his part, Stewart praised his Republican colleagues, saying “It's not one person who accomplishes anything in a county this size ... it takes a team.”
Stewart is also considered a serious contender for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated at the end of 2011 by Sen. Jim Webb (D). Stewart has not publicly declared for the seat but has expressed interest and is considered one of several front-runners.
First, however, he needs to win his re-election bid for the chairman's job, which is not expected to be a difficult feat.
So far, he has four potential challengers: Haymarket Councilman Bob Weir (R), Independent John Gray, Planning Commissioner Gary Friedman (D) and physician Babur Lateef (D).
