Battlefield sweeps first round of states in baseball, softball and soccer

So far, so good.

The three remaining sports teams from Battlefield High School that are left in the Group AAA state tournament all won at home in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, meaning the Bobcats will have semi-final appearances in softball, baseball and girls soccer on Friday at Westfield High School in Chantilly.

Freshman Sydney Sisk booted the soccer team's only goal of the day in the first half against Midlothian, but that turned out to be all Battlefield needed as the girls prevailed 1-0, the first Battlefield team to win at the quarterfinals Tuesday.

The soccer team faces McLean in the semi-finals 4 p.m. on Friday.

Kimmy Brady provided a similar spark for the softball team as her solo inside-the-park homerun in the fourth inning gave the Bobcats their winning 1-0 magin against Matoaca while centerfielder Tyler Welch made two acrobatic catchers that likely prevented extra-base hits and possible RBIs.

Pitcher Miranda Kemp tossed another complete-game shutout in picking up the win. The softball team faces Hickory on Friday.

On the baseball field, Chris Wendle, John Williams and Zach Harris all clubbed home runs of their own during Battlefield's 10-5 drubbing of Mills Godwin. Wendle also had a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that set the tone for the game.

Starting pitcher Nate Abel earned the win after giving up three runs through 4+ innings. Harris threw the final three innings.

The baseball team faces Chantilly High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

Check back for full recaps of these games and the upcoming state tournament games later in the week.
