Tiger girls top Falcons at Woodberry Forest

Indoor track meets generally are not known for pitting only two or three teams against each other, but a meet last week just outside of Orange gave Brentsville District a chance to size up its Evergreen District foe Fauquier up close and personal just weeks before the district championship.

The Tiger girls ended up topping the Falcons 92 to 66 with Brooke Point finishing in third place as part of the three-team event. Meanwhile, the Tiger boys had a bit of a tougher time stuck in third place with 67 points. Fork Union (72.50 points) and Fauquier (69) earned the top spots overall while host Woodberry Forest (59.50) and Brooke Point (44) rounded out the final two spots.

Out of 29 events between the boys and girls races, Brentsville racers captured 12 titles, eight of which belonged to the girls. Senior Morgan Price grabbed the gold in the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs by coming in just under her seed time in both events. She shaved off 11.16 seconds from her entry time to finish the 3,200 in 11:48.84 and she just came in under her 5:30 seed time in the 1,600 by 0.15 seconds. That turned out to be just under 30 seconds faster than second-place teammate Lindsey Bradshaw as the two combined for 10 points.

Amber Cowthran ended up with three golds on the day, one as an individual and two as part of relay teams. In the high jump, Cowthran, Rachel Reynolds and Lindsay Woods ended up one, two and three as the event went uncontested by other teams. That win-by-showing-up strategy worked out well for Crystal Hunt in the long jump too as she was the only one to leap, landing after 13 feet, 7.5 inches. No one competed in the girls triple jump. Katie Mikus only had to dispatch of one opponent in the shut put to claim the six points for first in that event, doing so with a throw of 27 feet, 2.25 inches.

Cowthran, Hunt and Woods joined Rachel Marion as part of the first-place 4x200 meter team, which just edged out a win by 2.27 seconds over the Falcons. Cowthran and Reynolds also teamed up with Myra Kinder and Taylor Coates to record a time of 4:40.55 in the 4x400 meter relay, good enough to win by 10.20 seconds. Reynolds led a pack of Tigers in the 500 meter dash as she, Coates and Caroline Desmedt placed first, second and third respectively to rack up 13 team points.

Brentsville also used its depth to its advantage even when Fauquier took ended up on top. Though the Falcons' Jazmyne Moore won the 300 meter dash, Brentsville actually gained the most points in the event as Hunt, Marion and Woods ended up in the next three spots.

For the boys, Zach Morrow led the way by claiming victory in the 1,000 meter run and as part of the 4x800 meter relay team that included Tyler Giller, Mike Blair and Tyler Eliason. That race proved to be the closest of the day, even compared to the short-distance sprinters as only 0.15 seconds separated the first-place Tigers from second-place Falcons.

The Tiger boys snatched another relay win in the 4x200 race after Alex Orellana, Tom Blair, Hampton Irvin and Aaron Keller clocked in at 1:37.93. Devon Drake brought home the boys' only other individual title. He and teammate Cameron Calfee placed first and second with respective leaps of 6 feet and 5-feet, 10 inches.

Brentsville has one more home race Feb. 2 before the district championship is held Feb. 7 at Kettle Run High School on the Fauquier side of Nokesville. Regions follow Feb. 16 at Fork Union and the Group AA state championship is set for Feb. 26 at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
