Bobcat boys, Tiger girls bring home swim wins

It took some time for the liquid dust to settle, but after everything was said and done, the Battlefield boys snagged a four-point win Saturay against western Prince William rival Brentsville District while the Tiger girls prevailed over their Bobcat counterparts.

The boys' win kept up Battlefield undefeated for the season and came against the defending Group AA state champions. However, the loss for Brentsville will not have any real affect on the Tigers' post-season drive as the meet was a non-district, non-regional event.

The biggest news to come out of the girls' meet came from Battlefield's Natalie Martin breaking the school recording in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.15, granting Martin a berth to states.

In a statement, Battlefield coach Jay Thorpe said, "I told them this would be the biggest test of the season and laid down the ultimate challenge. It was great to see them step up.

Battlefield picked up the win on the boys' side despite Brentsville placing first in six events compared to the Bobcats' five first-place finishes. Those bringing back individual gold for Battlefield included Bill Pogue in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.62), Nick Mathis in the 200 individual medley (2:03.08), Ford Whitticar in the 100 yard butterfly (54.53) and Jacob Croasdell in the 500 freestyle (4:54.65). The four combined to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.11) in the final race of the event, which put BHS over the edge.

Brentsville's Ryan Dunne checked in with a big day as he brought back two individual titles in the 50 yard free style (22.01) and 100 yard backstroke (50.46). Meanwhile, Nathan Brown and Chuckie Zumbaugh also won gold in the 100 yard freestyle (50.46) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.26) respectively. Brentsville's 200 yard freestyle relay team (1:32.11) also ended up in first place.

For the ladies, the same result played out as Brentsville placed first in six events compared to Battlefield's five only with Brentsville collecting more points further down the depth chart. The Tigers' Sydney Thorpe snagged two first-place individual titles at the meet by winning both the 200 yard freestyle (2:08.07) and 500 yard freestyle (5:44.24) as did teammate Nicole Haynes in the 50 yard freestroke (25.68) and 100 yard backstroke (1:01.16).

Martin and Holly Criscuolo snatched two top spots each of their own for Battlefield. Martin's came in the 200 individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.91) while Criscuolo earned top scores in the 100 yard free stroke (56.97) and butterfly (1:00.19).

Brentsville outgunned Battlefield two-to-one in relay matches by winning the 200 medley (1:53.72) and 200 freestyle (1:49.25) while Battlefield brought in first place in the 400 free style relay (3:51.68).
