Sheriff Glen Hill to seek third term

Prince William County Sheriff Glendell Hill (R) announced today that he will be running for office "one more time" come this fall.

The two-term incumbent first elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2007 plans to formally unveil his campaign during the next week. He told The Times during a brief phone interview this evening that he has been working on a press release and plans to discuss his candidacy during the first week of March.

Hill will enter the fall as a heavy favorite for re-election. He won his first race against then-incumbent Lee Stoffregen III (D) 59-41 percent after Stoffregen won the Democratic primary by the same margin.

Four years later, Hill defeated two challengers in the GOP primary by taking 61 percent of the vote. He then topped independent Louis Dominguez 79-20 that November. Dominguez had been endorsed by the Prince William County Democratic Committee after the party failed to nominate a candidate against Hill. However, Dominguez was still listed on the ballot as an independent.

When asked about whether local Democrats will field a challenger this year against Hill, Prince William County Democratic Chairman Bruce Roemmelt replied, "We're in serious discussions right now with a potential candidate." He did not reveal that person's name.

The sheriff's office has jurisdiction over Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. According to the official county Web site, the mission of the sheriff's office is to "provide security at the Judicial Center, serve all court process, provide timely transport for prisoners and patients, and continue to develop and enhance collaboration with all of our partners."
