BHS, BDHS rack up district track wins

Battlefield and Brentsville District opened up the indoor track post-season with big wins as the boys and girls teams from both schools brought back district titles.

In the Evergreen District, the Tiger girls won convincingly 73 to 56 over second-place Kettle Run while the boys edged out the Cougars 77.5 to 73. Both teams' wins can largely be attributed to the strength of their depth charts.

While the girls only won four out of 14 events and Andrew Hull brought home the boys' only individual gold of the day in the 1,600 meter run (4:36.7), the Tigers routinely racked up second-through-fifth-place points while a limited number of opponents ended up on top.

Veterans Morgan Price and Rachel Reynolds had the biggest day for the girls with each capturing two victories. Price, who also served as the Tigers' lead cross country runner during the fall, led the 3,200 meter field with a time of 11:28.8. She ran more than twice as fast during the 1,600 meter run as she clocked in ahead of the field at 5:16.2.

Reynolds competed in the field and short track, scoring individual victories in the high jump (4-foot-8) and 500 meter dash (1:28.2). Each first place title was worth six points. Reynolds brought in an extra two points for her bounds in the triple jump that totaled 28 feet, 6 inches, good enough for fourth place. She her 13-foot leap in the long jump put her one foot behind teammate Crystal Hunt, who grabbed one point for finishing fifth in that event.

Crystal Hunt competed in five events for the girls and brought back 11 points, eight of which came from second-place finishes in the 300 meter dash (44.2 seconds) and the triple jump (29 feet, 2 inches). Amber Cowthran tallied nine points in three events for coming in second in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), third in the 300 meter dash (46.1 seconds) and fourth in the 55 meter dash (7.8 seconds).

Katie Mikus's throw of 25 feet, 11.5 inches also projected her into second place in the shot put for Brentsville.

For the boys, Hull complemented his victory with a third-place showing in the 3,200 meter run (10:15.5). Meanwhile, Hampton Irvin may not have won any events outright, but his performances proved to be crucial in keeping Kettle Run out of first place and certainly qualified him for team MVP.

Irvin accumulated a team-high 11 points on the day by placing second in the long jump (19 feet, 2.5 inches), third in both the triple jump (36 feet, 11 inches) and 300 meter dash (37.9 seconds) and fifth in the 55 meter dash (6.9 seconds).

His teammate Devon Drake put up major points as well, as he tallied nine points for his two second-place finishes in the triple jump (39 feet, 0.5 inches), and 55 meter hurdles (8.3 seconds) and fifth place finish in the long jump (18 feet, 1.5 inches).

Other silver medalists for the Brentsville boys included Khaleel Momen in the shot put (40 feet, 2 inches), Aaron Keller in the 500 meter dash (1:09), Zach Morrow in the 1,000 meter run (2:44.1), Alex Orellana in the 300 meter dash (37.2 seconds) and the 4x200 meter relay team.

For Battlefield, the Cedar Run District event at home in Haymarket ended up being a two-school meet for the most part as the race mostly featured just Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson athletes with a few from Osbourn.

Battlefield’s list of individual winners included Byron Sintim, Chris Blaylock, Haben Zemichael and Nathan Moyer. The 4x800 meter relay team of Matt Moser, Stan Muckerman, Aaron Hill, Michael Longoria also brought home a gold.

Ellison Grove, Marina Capalbo, Nicole Carter and Virginia Hill led the girls with individual wins along with the 4x800 relay team of Sarai Arbus, Kelsey Goodwin, Caitlyn Tschida and Kristina Lee. Grove, Capalbo and Jasmine and Virginia Hill also combined for a win in the 4x400 meter relay.
