Raiders sweep Bobcats in Manassas

Both of Stonewall Jackson's varsity basketball teams remained undefeated for the season on Friday night by topping their Battlefield counterpoints at The Wall in Manassas.

The Lady Raiders never trailed during their 53-30 victory. Amber Lewis led Battlefield with 15 points while Ryan Jordan (22) and Danielle Burns (15) topped the leaderboard for Stonewall.

During the boys game, a second-half surge by Battlefield ended up peaking too early as Stonewall held off its visiting district rival 63-55. The game featured slam dunks, a rarity at the high school level, by the Raiders' Marquis Yates and Battlefield's Terrell Walker.

The problem for BHS with the second one though is the referees called a technical foul on Walker for hanging on the rim, which led to two successful foul shots from J.R. Washington that blew up what could have been a two-point game in the fourth quarter to four points.

Check back later this week and in the Dec. 22 edition of the print copy of the newspaper for a complete recap of both games, along with quotes from players and coaches.

Also of note from Friday: Stonewall Jackson held a ceremony between the girls and boys games to honor alumni football players Ryan Williams and Chris Garrett by retiring their high school jerseys.

After graduating from SJHS in 2008, Williams went on to play for Virginia Tech before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals to the NFL this year.

Garrett, a 2005 SJHS graduate from Bristow, played for Ohio University and then signed last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
