Hill collects two golds for BHS runners

Now that the winter sports season is officially in full swing, indoor track runners at Battlefield have some encouraging signs about their prospects.

Sophomore Jasmine Hill provided a big spark for the Bobcats last weekend at the Centreville Winter Challenge, claiming two first place titles in individual events.

Her 20-point grab for the two top spots led the BHS girls team to a third place overall with 64 points. Meanwhile, the boys ended up in fifth.

Hill won the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.88 seconds, according to statistics provided by Milestat.com. She entered the race as a second seed but just outpaced Kady Badham from Woodbridge by 0.07 seconds.

The sophomore followed up with another victory in the 500 meter dash as she and senior Virginia Hill clocked in less than a second apart. They earned a combined 18 points for their team, with Jasmine finishing in 1:19.14 and Virginia ended up only 0.73 seconds behind.

Meanwhile, the BHS 4x400 meter relay team also captured gold with a 4:19.46 showing. That topped Woobridge, Brooke Point and Jeb Stuart.

On the 55 meter hurdles, freshman Claire Gloss made an impressive showing with a second place finishing time of 10:04 seconds.

The next best showing among the lady Bobcats went to Kristen Lee for her sixth place finish in the 3,200 meter run (13:07:05). Sofia McDaniel also picked up another two points for a shot put throw of 21 feet, 2.5 inches.

Battlefield's other points came from the 4x800 meter relay A team's fifth place finish (11:10.73), the B team ended up in the race race in eighth (11:26.51) and the 4x200 meter relay team's seven place showing (2:01.52).

As for the boys, the best performances went to the 4x200 and 4x400 squads, which both brought home silvers.

Kendrik Downs's time of 6.91 seconds in the 55 meter dash tied Stonewall Jackson's Andrew Malloy for second, but he had a lower seed time and was technically given third place. Meanwhile, three others were 0.02 seconds behind in the event won by Danny Bulas of Westfield (6.82).

Alex Merrit registered two top-eight finishes for Battlefield, coming in fifth in the 300 meter dash and eighth in the 55 meter hurdles. Michael McCormack did the same, earning sixth in the 500 meter dash and eighth in the 300.

Mitchell Guth (sixth place, 1,000 meter run) and Romere Hopson (fifth, high jump) also registered points for Battlefield, as did the 4x800 meter relay team for coming in seventh.
