Battlefield wraps up record-breaking fall season
The varsity football team was the last Battlefield athletic program from the fall sports season still competing on Saturday and its loss in the state semi-finals capped the most successful fall yet for the high school in Haymarket.
Though the school did not produce any state champions, like in 2010 for football, Battlefield set a school record for its fall sports programs by sending four teams to states. Football, golf and boys and girls cross country squads all made it to the big dance over the last two months.
Battlefield sent three fall teams to states in 2010: football, golf and cheerleading. Individual runners from the cross country teams made it to states but the teams as wholes did not.
For the second consecutive year, six out of seven varsity athletic squads from Battlefield made it at least to the regional playoffs. The football, golf, and boys and girls cross country teams all ended up representing BHS at states.
Meanwhile, the volleyball team finally caught its ever-elusive white whale of sorts by clinching its first trip to regions. The Battlefield cheerleading team also earned another trip to regions after winning districts.
In fact, five teams from Battlefield won districts this year, though only the football and golf teams captured regional titles.
The only varsity fall sports team not to make it out of districts this fall season was the field hockey squad. Essentially, that squad swapped spots with the volleyball team considering the 2010 field hockey team ended up in regions while the volleyball team did not.
Another first for Battlefield revolves around the football team. Its game on Dec. 3 marked the first-ever state semi-final football match held on the Bobcats' home field since Battlefield High School opened in 2004.
This year also is the third consecutive time Battlefield has appeared in the state semi-finals following regional titles in football. Battlefield has appeared in the regional final each of the last four years, making the Class of 2012 the most victorious class in BHS history.
