Cougars devastate Tigers 59-0 in opener
To describe Kettle Run's 59-0 drubbing of Evergreen District rival Brentsville District as a "blowout" would gloss over just exactly how far apart the two teams are in their current trajectory.
Kettle Run set a school record for biggest margin of victory at home last Friday while also handing Brentsville its worst loss since at least the time the school switched from Group A to Group AA status almost 10 years ago.
"They’re just more athletic than we are," said Brentsville head coach Tommy O’Neill, who also made his debut as the Tigers’ leader. "It just comes back to execution."
The Cougars amassed a 31-0 lead by the end of the first quarter alone, a score that grew to 52-0 by halftime.
Had Kettle Run coach Jeff Lloyd kept all his starters throughout the second half, the margin may have been even more lopsided despite the non-stop running game clock that went into effect from the start of the third quarter.
"They gave us some fire," said Kettle Run quarterback Mac Graham. "It’s good to get revenge."
Entering the game, Kettle Run held the dubious distinction of being the only team Brentsville beat during the past two seasons. The loss just happened to be on opening day last year.
A quick fumble by Brentsville at the start of the game set up Kettle Run with an opportunity to set the tempo of the game. Senior Julian Drakeford quickly capitalized with an 11-yard rushing touchdown, to put the Cougars ahead early.
Then, with 8:32 on the clock, Graham scooted down the right sideline for a seven-yard score of his own.
A muffed punt gave Kettle Run prime field position inside the red zone to start the Cougar's next offensive drive. In danger of falling behind by three touchdowns in the first eight minutes, Brentsville caught two lucky breaks as back-to-back Kettle Run touchdowns were called back because of penalties.
Instead, Brentsville linebacker Ryan Truesdale held the line on a third-and-seven play at the 9-yard-line with an ankle tackle three following a pitch to the backfield for a loss of three yards. A 29-yard field goal by Evan Szklennik gave Kettle Run a 17-0 advantage but kept the Tigers from being completely run over.
Or so the sentiment could have gone at the time.
Following the kick off, a first-down fumble by Brentsville gave Kettle Run its fourth-straight possession start inside the 20 yard line.
Joshua Tapscott converted on the first play from scrimmage with 3:46 remaining, trotting untouched into the end zone through a massive gap on the right side of the line.
"We knew we had good speed," said Graham about his team’s offense. "Their corners fly back and then they bite on their first move."
Tapscott and Kettle Run coach Jeff Lloyd credited blockers Matt Eggers, CJ Brownlow, Drew Shirkey, Josh Wicka, Skylar Brownlow, Matt Tingle, Ryan Keckley and Jonathan Grammo for providing consistent outlets for him to break through.
The Cougars forced Brentsville into a three-and-out punt that carried 26 yards and returned to the Tigers' 32 yard line.
On second-and-10, the senior Graham opted for a play-action pass toward the Brentsville sidelines that drifted across the goal line as a sort of jump ball. Junior wide receiver Michael Parker positioned himself first behind his Brentsville counterpart and then cut in front, leaping up and hauling the ball in over his head to put another six points on the board.
Another three-and-out by Brentsville actually led to the Cougars' first punt of the game three plays into the second quarter, finally giving the Brentsville defense some tangible leverage.
But it didn’t work out that way offensively.
Brentsville did not earn a first down during a drive the entire first half. Each chance ended a turnover or a pun and each time, Kettle Run found itself with less than 50 yards to go to pay dirt.
On second down at the Brentsville 44-yard-line, Tapscott juked from the center of the field toward the Cougar’s sideline torched the Tigers’ secondary for a touchdown.
The PAT put the score at 38-0 and soon became 45-0 when Tapscott returned a punt 46 yards for a score.
Place kicker Szklennik added his own offensive flare by catching the Cougars last touchdown of the half, a 53-yard strike from Graham to give Kettle Run a 52-0 lead just before half time.
Tapscott set of the final firework of the night at the start of the third quarter by returning the opening kickoff the length of the field for his fourth touchdown.
"Our new field really helps" with speed, Tapscott said, explaining that the low grass is good for running.
While Kettle Run starts off the year with a win large enough to pad everyone’s stats, Brentsville exited the game knowing, as assistant coach Eugene Baltimore told them, that "we can’t put ourselves in a hole" to start any game.
"Tonight, they were a better team," said O’Neill, "and then things happen."
