Public hearing on Haymarket budget set for May 12
A public hearing will be held May 12 for the Town of Haymarket's proposed $2.6 million operating and capital budget for fiscal year 2012.
The Haymarket Town Council will vote on the budget in one of the immediate follow-up meetings afterward as the current budget expires June 30.
The council has held no work sessions on the budget outside of regularly-scheduled monthly meetings and continuation meetings as the six members and mayor have so far indicated they are willing to support its contents.
There is one proposed tax increase proposed in the budget. The cigarette tax would be bumped up to 50 cents from 35 cents.
Otherwise, the $0.00164 property tax rate and the 4 percent meals tax rate are both set to stay the same. The budget also calls for a 5 percent rent hike "on all tenants for next year" that rent or lease property from the town government.
More information about the proposed budget can be found at www.townofhaymarket.org.
