BHS runners rack up first-place wins at home meet

The Battlefield boys and girls outdoor tracks teams collected a combined seven first-place finishes this past Saturday at home in Haymarket during the annual Battlefield relays with jumper Byron Sintim leading the way.

The senior captured titles for his 23-feet, 0.5-inches leap in the long jump and his bounds totaling 44-feet, 4-inches in the triple jump. The high school track Web site Milestat.com reported that the veteran field performer's long jump distance put him in first place not just for the event but for the entire commonwealth as it marked the longest single jump in the commonwealth at this point in the season.

While records are likely to change during the next two months before the spring season comes to a close, Sintim and Battlefield as a whole are looking sharp based on their performances Saturday. They outpaced local Group AAA rivals from Manassas in overall first-place titles as Stonewall Jackson earned six golds and Osbourn Park ended up with five.

Battlefield's Jessica Rolle, Taylor Cockrell, Jasmine Hill and Ellison Grove topped their seed time of 4:29.05 by better than 14 seconds to finish first in the 1,600 meter sprint medley. Rolle, Hill, Virginia Hill and Mariah Robinson also snatched first place in the 800 meter sprint medley with a time of 1:51.48, 4.52 seconds faster than Stonewall.

Meanwhile, Grove, Virginia Hill, and Marina Capalbo combined for first place twice: once with Shelby File in the 4x400 meter relay (4:20.99) and again in the 4x800 meter relay (9:36.85) with Nicole Carter.

For the boys, Luke Mazzu, Cameron Henken, Owen Malinowski and Haben Zemichael brought in a No. 1 spot in the 4x1,600 meter relay (18:46.04).

Battlefield runners also found themselves in second place four times. That included the boys' 800 (1:40.5) and 1,600 (3:45.24) sprint medleys runs and Joshua Paquin's silver in the pole vault (9-feet, 6-inches).

The girls distance medley team recorded a time of 13:02.59 to earn the ladies' lone second-place finish of the day.

Overall, the Bobcats collected six bronzes on the day with Galissia Cause accounting for two of them from the field in the discus throw (94-feet, 11-inches) and shot put (33-feet).
