Injuries slow Tigers as BDHS drops two

At least Brentsville District won a game before the injury bug bit this year.

The varsity football team has endured major setbacks this year with five players coming down with injuries. That includes star running backs David Hammond and Mike Lennox, both of whom are out "indefinitely," according to head coach Dean Reedy.

"The week before and last week, we really got banged up bad," said the coach.

A separated shoulder for Hammond and broken collar bone for Lennox mixed with a couple twisted ankles and even a concussion to some of their teammates is part of the reason why the Tigers dropped two games straight after securing their first win since 2008 on opening day.

Brentsville played closely the last two weeks, dropping 6-3 to Freedom (South Riding) and 26-7 to Skyline. While the score on the latter game may seem like a blowout, the Tigers actually led 7-6 in the third quarter before the Hawks offense managed to pick apart the Brentsville secondary for some big gains that lead to 20 unanswered points.

Anthony Blair scored the Tigers' lone touchdown after the senior caused a fumble in the third quarter deep in Skyline territory before falling on the ball in the end zone.

"They just threw the ball on us," noted Reedy. He mentioned that injuries in the Brentsville secondary particularly hurt the team.

"We didn't cover well and they capitalized," he said, further explaining that in the future, the "whole secondary" is going to have to step up and avoid blown coverage. "We've got a whole different perspective of the game up 7-6."

The injury to Hammond "forced" Brentsville to throw heavily against Skyline, which is not something Reedy opposes, but is not his preference. He explained that it is the job of some of the sub-in players to now get Brentsville back into its offense comfort zone of rushing first and passing second instead of the other way around.

Reedy mentioned senior quarterback KC Willard performed well but "got banged up a little bit" too. He said it is up to fresh faces like Andre Dallas at free safety and Keith Watkins at running back to plug gaps that beset Brentsville.

"With some younger kids, (it's) baptism by fire," said Reedy. He later added that for those players, "Here's your time to shine."
