Nokesville couple die in murder-suicide
On September 18th at 7:34AM, police responded to the 15700 block of Widewater Dr in the Montclair section of Prince William County (22025) for a shooting in progress. A preliminary investigation, at this point, has revealed that the victim, a 38 year old woman of Nokesville, got into a verbal argument with her husband, a 42 year old man. The couple drove to the cul-de-sac on Widewater Dr.
This is where the argument escalated and the husband allegedly pulled a handgun on the victim and shot her in the upper body. The husband, in turn, shot himself in the head. The husband was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The shootings took place outside of their vehicle in the roadway on Widewater Dr. It is still under investigation as to why the couple drove to this particular street in Montclair.
Police have responded out to the couples address for domestic on June 26th of this year at around 10:08PM. The husband was subsequently arrested for domestic assault and battery. Both the victim and husband were served with an emergency protective order (EPO) which bars contact between the two individuals. The EPO had expired prior to today's incident and no extension had been filed. It has also been revealed that the victim was a Prince William County employee. Investigation continues.
Identified:
Jennifer A. Bates, 38, of 8151 Erika Dr, Nokesville (20181)
Robert W. Bates, 42, of the same address
