QB Greene rushes for two touchdowns, boosts BHS to 3-0

Three down, seven to go. Battlefield's perfect streak during the regular season jumped to 32 this past week as the Bobcats' varsity football team doubled up former district rival Osbourn Park 24-12 on the road in Manassas. Quarterback Devon Greene appeared to solidify his role as the Bobcats' (3-0) new full-time starter as he rushed for two one-yard touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the second quarter following a 46-yard hook up with Turner Meeks. "I wouldn't say that his passing has improved that much. I would say we've changed things around where the passing game is more geared more toward his style," said head coach Mark Cox, praising the rookie starter for giving his team more versatility in the backfield. A five-yard touchdown run by senior back Nagee Jackson put the Bobcats up 17-6 in the third quarter before Greene plowed his way in for Battlefield's last touchdown of the game later that quarter. Osbourn Park's two scores came at the bookends of the game. Gary Jackson busted out a 76-yard run during the Yellow Jackets' first possession and quarterback Denathan Dukes hooked up with Damien Nicholson in the final minute of the game. Battlefield defender Andrew Smith blocked the first extra point and OP failed on a two-point conversion on the second one. Battlefield kicker Jason Hoepker made his three extra-point attempts along with a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter. According to Cox, Smith proved to be one of the team's most consistent players during the last two years, being a reliable workhorse and defensive threat apt at creating turnovers or breaking up plays. "He's quiet, just does what he's supposed to do," said Cox of Smith. "He likes it that way. And we've been keeping him kind of as a secret at running back. He plays so well on defense, we use him sparingly on offense." Battlefield's biggest strength is clearly in the offensive backfield as Cox feels comfortable running Jackson, Greene, Smith, Bobo Beathard and Cedric Agyeman at will. The coach mentioned that Greene's mobility as an option passer adds "another threat to our offense." Specifically, the 6-foot-1 senior demonstrated that he's more than just a fast pair of legs by throwing for 102 yards on a 7-for-12 performance, a considerable improvement from Week 1 when both he and quarterback Ryan Swingle combined didn't come anywhere close that margin. "When people key on our tailback so much, that opens up things for Devon," said Cox. At the same time, Cox said the team still has "all the confidence in the world" in Swingle. "We just got to get Ryan some more playing time," he said. One of the reasons Battlefield's been able to rush effectively is an improving offensive line, something Cox highlighted as one of the areas he wanted to work on during the pre-season. He singled out right tackle Eric Loehle, who is coming back from a 2009 injury, as someone who is "going to get the job" done right. "He's still learning things. He's going to get better," said the coach. Cox also noted defensive performances by Anthony Lopez, who picked off two OP passes Friday night, and Beathard, who broke up key pass attempts. "The secondary played better than they did against Potomac and that's a good sign because they're going to come up against a lot of team that do spread offense," he said.
