Times File PhotoCARTER: Battlefield sophomore Nicole Carter makes a dashing start earlier in the season.

Underclassmen lead BHS cross country runners

If there's one thing Battlefield can count on, it's that its future cross country teams are going to be littered with experience because the young runners are now leading the packs.

Freshman Haben Zemichael and sophomore Nicole Carter are typically pulling in the top spots for the Bocats boys and girls teams respectively, while underclassmen are rounding out other point-tallying positions.

Take, for example, the Oct. 2 Octoberfest run at The Plains. Carter pushed a 19-minute 5K run to claim seventh place at the match. Meanwhile, three other sophomores cracked the top seven for Battlefield: Kristen Loehle, Hannah Scwennesen and Caitlyn Tschita. Junior Rachel Thompson and freshman Samantha Arnold were the only non-10th-graders to end up in the top seven too.

The boys team is in a similar situation. At the same race, Zemichael led Battlefield in timing and sophomores Connor Lee, Cameron Henken and Luke Mazzu filled slots 2-4 on the team. Seniors Sean Domitrovits, Nathan Moyer and Owen Malanowski gave the Bobcats their other three position finishes.

Zemichael (17:03) was the only freshman to crack the top 25 and one of two freshman to even break the top 60 at the Oatlands Invitational on Sept. 25 in Leesburg, checking in 53 seconds behind first-place senior Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown.

Meanwhile, Carter posted the girls' best time at 20:32 while BHS's next best, senior Marina Capalbo, checked in about one minute later.

So far, one of both teams' best showings came at the Pole Green classic hosted by Lee-Davis in Mechanicsville last month. The girls and boys both ended up in fourth with the boys one point out of third.

Zemichael pulled in an eighth place at 17:12 while Lee clocked in 11 seconds and two spots later. Heneken (17th) and Domitrovits (22nd) also broke the top 25.

Moyer (28th) and David Schnorbus (31st) kept it close too, so much so that the fifth place team Hermitage ended up 60 points behind.

On the girls' side, Nicole Carter ended up as one of only four runners to break the 20-minute barrier by checking in at 19:53, good enough for fourth place. Loehle and Schwennesen helped BHS's point total by finishing one after the next in 23rd and 24th, seconds before Thompson crossed the finish line in 27th and sophomore Nicole Cercy registered a 32nd spot.

Battlefield has one more meet before districts on Oct. 20 when the boys and girls hit the road this Saturday for the Stallion Stampede. Regions are set for Nov. 4 and the Nov. 13 Group AAA state championship is on familiar territory in Fauquier at Great Meadows in The Plains.
