SJ attack shuts down Battlefield 3-0
Welcome to the one-woman wrecking crew.
Sure, Stonewall Jackson outside hitter Lauren Oxley had a little help from her friends, especially senior setter Tina Baehr. The two pestered Battlefield throughout Monday night's 3-0 SJ home win in Manassas.
But by the numbers alone, Oxley dominated. She tied her season high of 14 kills and deposited 10 aces while Baeher successfully converted 27 assists. Senior Skye Square had the next most potent night offensively for Stonewall (10-1 overall, 2-0 district) with five kills and four aces.
Oxley's deadliest showing came from behind the serving line early in the second game. After Stonewall had to come back from an 18-16 deficit in order to capture the first game 25-22, Oxley stepped up to white mark across the hardwood gymnasium floor with round No. 2 tied up at 1.
Out on the defense.
Ace.
Ace..
Ace...
By the time BHS senior Sarah Aloumouati set up classmate Jasmine Mann for a spike that bounced off Oxley's fists and on to the floor, the Stonewall junior led the Raiders on a 12-0 scoring drive. Oxley said she picked up on body language signs when moods ran low on the Battlefield (3-6, 0-2) side, which allowed her to target her serves toward "one person" at a time.
"I just wanted to drop it right in front of them," she said. Oxley's serves are heavy with top spin, which allows them to suddenly fall faster after they clear the net.
Stonewall coach Jim Sample said the junior outside hitter "did a lot of taking what was available." He credited her for being a "sneaky" point scorer.
Defensively, Sample said where his front blockers set up defensively "takes away a good third of the floor."
Battlefield did show signs of being able to beat the Stonewall push up at the net, especially during the first game. Junior server Noura Radhi led the Bobcats on a 4-0 run of their own that tied the game at 22-22 after an unforced SJ error, middle hitter Bailey Liddle killed a pass from Arianna Fore, Radhi served an ace, and Oxley hammered a shot out of bounds.
The Raiders won that round on back-to-back assists from Baehr to Oxley after Square dotted the boundary line on an upfront attack, just keeping the ball in bounds to count the point.
Stonewall led the entire third game usually by 4-7 points and won it 25-19, causing the freshman and junior varsity girls to storm the court with shrieks for their varsity sisters. The volleyball program as a whole at SJ has a reputation for featuring boisterous and spirited teams from the lowest to highest level.
As the varsity girls reached the 24th point in each game on Monday, their younger counterparts in the bleachers would all raise their right index fingers up to make the No. 1 signal, as in, one more point for the win. All three times it worked too as Stonewall immediately scored the game-clinching 25th point without impediment.
According to Baehr, staying successful means the team needs to keep its collective foot on the momentum pedal.
"(We) can't let it down at all," she said.
