BDHS sends 7, BHS 5 to regions

In the local battle for bragging right, Brentsville District receives top honors over western county rivals Battlefield this year for sending not just the most number of sports teams to the regional tournament, but the most with No. 1 rankings.

The Tigers finished in first place in the Evergreen District in six non-individual outdoor sports games: baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse and boys and girls soccer. Brentsville's boys tennis team also earned a berth to the Region II tournament with a second-seed coming out of districts after falling to Fauquier 5-3 in the tournament finale.

Three Tiger teams clinched their regular season crowns Friday. The boys and girls lacrosse teams fell on the right side of one-goal victories as the boys nudged aside newest rival Kettle Run 13-12 and the girls took care of their own new district rival Eastern View 16-15. No such luck was needed for the baseball team though as BDHS walloped Warren County 26-4.

Battlefield meanwhile claimed two regular season Cedar Run District title wins with softball and boys soccer leading the way. Girls soccer along with boys and girls lacrosse all finished in regional-qualifying second place behind top district rival Loudoun Valley. The Vikings also took the top spot in boys and girls tennis.

For Battlefield, only the baseball team did not make it past the Cedar Run District tournament. Osbourn knocked the Bobcats out of the playoffs Monday night in Manassas, winning 4-3 in the district semi-finals after the Bobcats staged a seventh-inning rally during which the boys scored all of their runs.

Monday night proved also to be kind and unkind to the BHS lacrosse programs as the girls lax team defeated Albemarle on the road but the boys team bowed out to Patrick Henry (Roanoke).

The dominant 18-2 BHS softball team had no such problems in the district semi finals with a 7-0 shutout over fourth-seeded Heritage. Both of the Bobcats' soccer teams finished with similar good fortunes in the district semis against Osbourn: the girls won 6-2 and the boys handled their Eagle counterparts 4-1.

Though Brentsville and Battlefield did not win outdoor track titles this spring, the teams did place some individual winners.

Rachel Reynolds (400 meter dash), Mystique Ro (300 meter hurdles), Crystal Hunt (200 meter dash) and the 100 (Hunt, Ro, Amber Cowthran and Denise Cruz) and 400 (Reynolds, Caitlin Hoffman, Nia Bentall and Myra Kinder) meter relay teams all took home gold for the Tiger girls while Corey Scott (800 meter run) earned first for the boys. Hunt and Scott were each awarded with No. 3 seeds entering the May 26 Region II meet.

Battlefield earned six top spots in the Cedar Run District champion thanks to standout performances from Johanna Dominick (high jump), Nathan Moyer (800 and 1,600 meter runs), Darren Driscoll (3,200 meter run), Byron Sintim (long jump) and the boys 4x800 meter relay team(Moyer, Sebastian Paniagua, Vaughn Franklin and James Chrisman),

Moyer (800 meter run), Sintim (long jump) and Genevieve Johnson (100 meter dash), who finished second at districts, earned the highest seeds for Battlefield entering the Northwest Regional championship, set to be held this Friday night. All are placed in fifth.
