First-graders get lesson on U.S. flag

Members of the American Legion are once again visiting area elementary schools this year to introduce first-graders to the Pledge of Allegiance and the history of the United States flag. American Legion Posts 1799 Haymarket, 10 Manassas, 364 Woodbridge, and 28 Dumfries/Quantico are being joined by posts from Fairfax for the Flags for First-Graders program.

Legion members have already visited Alvey, Gravely, Victory Lakes, All Saints, Mullen, Glenkirk, Tyler, Mountain View, Sudley, Cedar Point and Nokesville elementary schools and will soon be coming to Bristow Run, Buckland Mills, Porter and Pennington.

This is the fifth year the program has been provided to all Prince William and Manassas public elementary schools, plus two Department of Defense schools in Quantico and All Saints Elementary in Manassas.

Last year, the program was provided to 5,953 first-graders and more than 6,000 are expected to participate this year. After the presentations, each student receives a U.S. flag.
