Battlefield teacher is finalist for top award

Three educators have been selected as finalists from among 20 nominees for the Prince William County Teacher of the Year Award. The teachers are Mary “Tate” Kenneally of Battlefield High School; Elizabeth “Libba” Genova of Gar-Field High School; and Bobbie Mandro of Swans Creek Elementary School.

The winner will be announced next month.

Kenneally teaches algebra II to juniors and seniors and functions analytical geometry to juniors at Battlefield.

“Life can be hard and so is math,” Kenneally wrote about her subject. Her philosophy is to provide her students with the tools to attain success in a firm, friendly, and fair manner.

“My challenge and commitment is to help all students—to assist those who are challenged and equally challenge those who are gifted,” she added.

Her diligence and dedication are key factors in creating a nurturing learning environment that has produced algebra II SOL scores that are among the highest in the state.

Kenneally earned her bachelor of science degree from James Madison University. In her 38-year career, she has gained experience teaching grade levels from ninth grade through college.

Since joining Prince William, she has taught at Osbourn Park High School, Brentsville District High School, and is currently at Battlefield.
