Gainesville library fundraiser nets $10,000

With government funding running low, patrons and supporters of the Gainesville Neighborhood Library took matters into their own hands last Saturday, raising thousands of dollars for the facility.

The Gravely Elementary School PTO sponsored the fundraiser, with help from other area schools, businesses and organizations.

Sarah Hyde, marketing director for the fundraiser, said Monday that approximately 700 people attended.

“Proceeds hit and exceeded the $10,000 mark,” she said.

The fundraiser, which was held at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, centered around a media sale of used books, CDs, videos and games, but that was only one of the events offered.

Kettle corn and pizza were offered and area principals and vice principals read books to children. T-shirts and mugs were sold with pictures of colorful books bursting out of the library building and a silent auction offered services and gifts for all ages. One of the more popular items auctioned off was photography work by Battlefield students.

A moon bounce in the book sale area allowed children to play while their parents browsed for books and all of the leftover children’s books were donated to schools in Prince William County with high numbers of students who speak English as a second language.

At lunchtime, a chili cook-off featured several local restaurants.

Hyde said that A La Carte Catering of Haymarket won first place in the chili cook-off. Second place went to the Lion and Bull of Haymarket and third place went to South Street Under of Leesburg.

But the big winner of the day was the library, which not only picked up thousands of needed dollars, but also gained from intense community support: more than 90 residents and citizens volunteered for the event and more than 120 local businesses donated items and services.
