Senators are on a winning streak
The Haymarket Senators burst into this week on a six-game winning streak, starting with a win over Luray on June 14.
“The Senators have been on a roll!” said co-owner Robin Schaffler. “We are leading the league in nearly all categories -- wins, hits, runs.”
The Senators first topped Luray, 6-5, in Haymarket last Monday.
Then they went on to beat Harrisonburg, 11-3, with 17 hits on the road on June 16. The next day, they followed it up with another blowout, taking down Front Royal, 7-3 with 12 hits back home in Haymarket.
The next three nights were the same story: 11-5 over Woodstock on Friday (16 hits); 7-0 against Covington on Saturday (nine hits) and 14-2 versus Winchester on Sunday (17 hits).
Against Covington, Matt Benedict struck out six and scattered six hits in 7 innings while Eric Stamets and Jim Vihalik had two hits each for the Senators.
In Sunday's game at home against Winchester, Haymarket scored 12 runs in its final five at-bats. Leading 2-1 after one, the Senators scored three, one, one, four and three runs in the fourth through eighth innings to turn a close game into a rout.
Rudy Flores led a 17-hit attack with five RBI and was named the Valley League's Player of the Week.
Flores, the Senators' first baseman, hails from Corpus Christi, Texas and attends Florida International University.
He hit at second-best in the league, .462 with 12 hits in 26 at-bats, and lead the league with 15 RBIs. During Haymarket’s game against Winchester, Flores went 3 for 5 with 5 RBIs. He also had a .615 slugging percentage with four doubles.
As of Tuesday morning, Haymarket boasted a 10-4 record, having won their last six games in a row. The team has won eight of their last 10.
