Powell, Muhlstein win theater competition

Gainesville playwright Greg Powell and director Lori Muhlstein once again swept the Northern Virginia Theater Alliance One Act Festival this year. Powell's play, “The Meeting,” took home the awards for Best Director, Best Production of an Original Play and Best Overall Production.

Muhlstein led the production on behalf of Castaways Repertory Theatre.

Their play, “The Meeting,” is a drama that tackles the issues of alcoholism, addiction and recovery. It featured actors Mona Kay Helper, Elissa Hudson, Sam Repshas, Carl Nubile, K. Clayton, Chuck Dluhy, Mary Brick, Carrie Parsons, Lisa Nicholls and Sally Zatkoff.

The one-act competition was held June 18-26 and featured theater groups from around Northern Virginia. For the most part, Castaways Repertory Theatre and Springfield Community Theatre swept the awards, taking home the top prizes in most categories.

In addition to Powell and Muhlstein, the other winners are:
Kevin Walker, of Castaways Repertory Theatre won Best Supporting Actor for “Car Wash.”

Ellen McKinstrie of Castaways Repertory Theatre won Best Supporting Actress for “Car Wash.”

Donald Neal of Springfield Community Theatre won Best Actor for “Heroes.”

Erin Gallalee of Springfield Community Theatre won Best Actress for “Your Mother’s Butt.”

Springfield Community Theatre ( Erin Gallalee, Jay Tilley and Melissa Jo York-Tilley) won Outstanding Comedy Performance for“Your Mother’s Butt.”

Gary Crawford of Prince William Little Theatre won Best Sound Design for “Just Another Saturday Night.”

Springfield Community Theatre ( Fred Lash, Don Neal and Cal Whitehurst) won Best Small Ensemble for “Heroes.”
