BHS win at Aloha Classic sets up team for playoffs

As the gymnastics regular season came to a close Saturday, local freshmen from Battlefield, Brentsville District and Stonewall Jackson came up big for their teams with top-five finishes in every event Saturday.

Yet it was senior Erin Turner that once again cashed in the biggest victory of all as her win in the all-around paved the way for Battlefield to capture its second-straight Aloha Classic.

Battlefield's team score of 111.40 was just 0.30 points less than the team's winning number in the highly-competitive Maroon Division from 2009. The Bobcats finished 5.80 points ahead of second-place Colonial Forge (105.60).

At the same time, Turner brought home her second-straight all-around crown from the sixth-annual meet at Stonewall Jackson HS with a 38.275, 0.600 points better than what she scored last year.

She earned first place on the floor (9.625) and second place on the vault (9.6), uneven bars (9.5) and balance beam (9.55).

"I was just happy to compete today because I couldn't compete last week because I had club too. So I was just happy to compete with my team and I'm glad that we won because we've been working really hard in practice," said Turner.

The win positions Battlefield to start its march toward the post-season with high hopes. The team placed three top-five finishers on the uneven bars with freshman Kari Willett (9.375) and senior Mandy Brown (9.175) ending up in third and fourth. Sophomore Alex Fairbanks cashed in a 9.5 score on the floor to earn second place in what's become her signature event during the last two years.

No scores below a 9.15 qualified for a top-five finish at any Aloha Classic event in the Maroon Division, meaning that for Battlefield to pull off the win, the team needed a strong showing throughout its depth chart. Collectively, the team earned event wins on the vault (27.65), bars (28.05), beam (27.625) and floor (28.075) even though coach Chevonne White opted to name Turner Battlefield's only all-around competitor.

On the beam, Tandeece Mazloum's 9.15 placed her tied with Lindsay Carr of Colonial Forge for fifth place and put her just 0.50 points behind fourth-place Amanda Hubener of Loudoun Valley, one of only two Vikings to earn a top-five spot in any event. Meanwhile, Kassie Krivo cracked the 9.0 barrier on vault by 0.1 points.

Then, there was Katie Surface, Brianna Artz and Jena Schroeder, who all posted scores of 8.9-8.95 at least once. What that means for Battlefield on a practical level is that with just a little improvement during the next week, Battlefield could have no fewer than seven individuals with 9.0-or-higher potential into the playoffs.

"I think we have a really good chance to place this year at states, maybe even winning. So I'm looking forward to that," said Turner.
