Firefighters injured; cat dies in fire
On Sunday, February 21st at approximately 6:30 p.m. fire and rescue units responded to a townhouse fire located in the 1900 block of Teasel Court in Woodbridge.
Upon arrival on the scene, fire and rescue units discovered a raging fire on the primary entrance of a townhome located within a row of townhomes. Units attacked the fire from exterior windows and a door and were able to suppress the fire.
Two adults and two children were home at the time of the fire. Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family. No injuries were sustained by the family; however, a pet cat perished in the fire.
Two firefighters sustained minor burn injuries and were transported to a local hospital for additional care.
According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, property damage is estimated at $100,000.
The origin of the fire was the laundry room adjacent to the kitchen.
The cause of the fire was a malfunctioning dryer vent and has been determined accidental.

Clean lint filters before or after each use.
Remove lint accumulated around the drum.

Check the airflow of vents and exhaust vent pipes to be sure their free and unobstructed.
All indoor vents should discharge to the outside of the home.
Throughout the year, check the outdoor vent for blockage by snow, outside debris or animal nesting.
Never dry items that have come in contact with flammable substances such as cooking oil, gasoline, paint thinner and alcohol.
Combustible items such as boxes and clothing should be kept clear of the dryer area.
Never leave the dryer or any appliance running when leaving the home or going to bed.
