Talk about domination. The Brentsville District boys and girls swimming teams combined for 416 points at the Evergreen District championship meet last week in Warrneton to take home two title crowns. Both teams head back to the WARF this Friday for the Region II championship meet and already feature several swimmers that clinched state final spots. "We have a really strong boys team," said head coach Ashleigh Krzywicki one week prior to the meet. "We have quite a few standout swimmers. In terms of progression, we've improved in a lot of our harder strokes. I'm proud of a lot of our middle swimmers who are all working really hard to get state cuts. I'm just impressed with all of them as a team." After all, "we're a team that got 15 state cuts our first meet," she added. While the girls' 167-128 win over second-place Kettle Run came with four first-place finishes, the Tiger boys picked up eight wins while outgunning their Cougar counterparts 249-142. Michael Hughes and Ryan Dunne put up the biggest numbers on the day for any team. Each won two individual races and placed on the same two winning relay medley teams too. Dunne picked up wins in the 100 yard butterfly (54.16 seconds), 200 yard freestyle (1:46.40), both of which qualified him for states. Hughes' success came in the 100 yard back stroke (57.54 seconds) and the 500 yard freestyle (4:45.80). Not only did he earn a spot at states with both swims, but he set a Brentsville District school record with his performance in the 500. Hughes and Dunne joined Jules Coy and Tim Rackowski to claim top honors in the 200 yard medley relay (1:42.91) and partnered up with Jacob Katuin and Nathan Brown for first place in the 400 free style relay (3:27.50). Both teams earned automatic trips to states. Brown, Rackowski, Coy and Katuin brought home a separate state-qualifying team win in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:35.38). Coy also won the individual 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.21), qualifying him for states too. Brown also earned a spot at states for his performance in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle along with Justin Doyle and Jules Coy for their success in the 200 yard individual medley. Katuin's second place finish in the 50 yard free style granted him a trip to states too as did Rackowski's third-place showing in the 100 yard backstroke. "I feel like states is going to be good for the guys especially. I think we could definitely win states," Coy said at the end of the regular season. As for the girls, Nicole Haynes cleaned up shop with wins in three events. She set a school record in the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.17) and helped lead two relay teams to victory. Alongside Elizabeth Jerakis, Kara Tansill and Annalee Gallagher, the 400 freestyle relay team clocked in first at 4:05.21 while Haynes, Gallagher, Tansill and Emily Goodrich did the same in the 200 medley relay (2:01.26). Each of those victories came with a ticket to states. Haynes' second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle allowed her to break her second school record of the day with a state-qualifying bout while teammate Goodrich earned a trip to regions for her fourth-place finish. Tansill brought back the glory in the 100 yard butterfly too, with a regional qualifying time of 1:06.70. A win would likely propel her to states. Even though she came up just short in the 200 yard individual medley, her second place finish in that event did guarantee her at least one trip to states as an individual. Other regional qualifiers included Britany Higdon, Naoki Sugiura and Nick Allen (100 yard breaststroke); Doyle (100 yard backstroke); Blake Cash (500 yard freestyle); Taylor Belisch (500 yard freestyle); Kelsey DiBenedetto (100 yard freestyle); Sam Maranto (100 yard butterfly) and Ben Cumberland (50 yard freestyle). -Tanner Russo contributed to this report
