Officials: keep fire hydrants clear; shelter open
The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue would like to remind everyone to remove snow that is covering fire hydrants. In the instance of a fire, firefighters need to be able to quickly locate the fire hydrant, or lives and property could be lost. Businesses are also reminded to clear the areas around emergency exits to ensure their customers can exit safely in an emergency.
Prince William County has opened a community shelter at Lake Jackson Fire Station at 11310 Coles Drive, off Route 234 in Manassas, for those who have lost power and have a critical need. Those coming to the shelters should bring essential items to make themselves comfortable, including any prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and toiletries. Pets are not allowed in the shelter. Unless they have a critical need, such as electric medical equipment or prolonged heating outage and are unable to stay home, residents are encouraged to stay in place, so that they do not have to drive in the snow.
