VDOT to begin plowing subdivisions no earlier than Sunday
Subdivision homeowners in western Prince William should not expect VDOT to send out plow trucks to their communities until Sunday at the earliest as clean up crews focus on primary roads throughout Friday and Saturday.
"...It'll be several days before we have the subdivisions cleared," said VDOT spokeswoman Joan Morris Friday afternoon.
Morris, who focuses on Northern Virginia operations, said state transportation department has 1,800 "pieces of equipment ready for the weekend," including salt trucks, snow plows and snow blowers. She said 90 percent of the work force are private contractors.
The primary roads in western Prince William County that are set to receive priority attention include, among others, the Prince William County Parkway (Route 234 bypass), Interstate 66, Nokesville Road, Lee Highway and James Madison Highway. Those roads are considered "snow emergency routes," which "are designated by localities for immediate snow removal so emergency vehicles can use them," according to the VDOT Web site.
In all, Morris said VDOT is already $9 million over its $27 million snow removal budget for this winter.
"(During) the last storm, we burnt through our budget," she said, referencing the Dec. 19 blizzard that blanketed Northern Virginia. "But we're not going to reduce services. We're going to have to find money elsewhere from other maintenance programs."
