Peacor is new county executive
Melissa Peacor has been named Prince William's new county executive.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.
Peacor has been serving as the deputy county executive -- the second-in-command -- since 1999.
The county executive is the top administrator in the county. Appointed by the supervisors, the executive is responsible for implementing their instructions and for making recommendations on policy.
She also manages all of the county bureaucracy and all county employees report to her.
Peacor had previously been in charge of crafting the county budget and on Tuesday, Chairman Corey Stewart called her “our secret weapon” in the war on overspending. He credited her with cutting more than $101 million out of the county budget over the past few years as supervisors scramble to save money.
“She is a can-do person and she gets the job done,” he said. “There's a time when we need somebody who's going to take the bull by the horns and get the job done. That means sometimes breaking some of the dishes in the china cabinet. It means ruffling a few feathers once in awhile.”
In tough economic times, he said, the county needs a “tough person who's going to get that accomplished.”
Peacor has been working for the county since 1985, first in the Planning Office and then working her way up to deputy county executive in 1999.
She takes over as county executive from Craig Gerhart, who retired in 2009.
For the last few months, supervisors have been searching for his replacement, both inside and outside Prince William.
Peacor promised the supervisors that she would work to “improve our transparency and accountability and to continue to be creative and innovative as we face tough times.”
She will make $209,000 per year in her new position.
