Snow coming this evening

Snow showers are due to hit Gainesville around 5 p.m. this evening and last into Monday morning, but it appears the local area is likely to miss the brunt of the snow storm set to dump heavy snow along the Interstate 95 corridor.

According to Weather.com, Gainesville is due for flurries this morning and early afternoon before giving way to just cloudy skies until 5 p.m. That's when the snow is set to begin and last for roughly 13 hours. Accuweather.com reports that Gainesville residents can expect about an inch of snow. Other forecasts call for 2-4 inches in the general area. Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) already declared a state of emergency for the commonwealth.

"There is still uncertainty with the storm’s track, but the current outlook calls for the possibility of up to 12 inches of snow and high winds for eastern Virginia, including the Eastern Shore," states a press release issued Saturday by the governor's office. "Snow totals of 2 – 7 inches are predicted for the I-95 corridor and 2 - 5 inches for the I-81 corridor, with higher elevations predicted to receive up to 12 inches. There is still low confidence in this forecast so Virginians should pay close attention to their latest local forecast."
