Times File PhotoLET IT SNOW: Last year's Christmas parade in Old Town went on despite a raging blizzard. This year, the weather is expected to be more cooperative; early forecasts call for partly sunny skies all weekend, with no precipitation.

Ringing in the holidays

Prince William's holiday season officially begins this weekend and it's the perfect jam-packed three-day experience for those who need a little Christmas -- or a lot of Christmas -- right this very minute.

Celebrations in Old Town start on Friday evening and Santa will arrive on the Virginia Railway Express train at 6 p.m. Attendees can listen to the holiday music by local choral groups and Christmas swing performed by local musician, Jason Paul Curtis on the steps of the Manassas Museum.

After dark, Santa and Mayor Hal Parrish of Manassas will light the Old Town Christmas tree.

The event will also feature free hayrides around Old Town Manassas, and visits with Santa at the Harris Pavilion gazebo.

The Manassas Museum will also be conducting its annual Holiday Open House from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. offering free admission, holiday entertainment and refreshments.

The festivities continue on Saturday, Dec. 4, with the 65th annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. and runs along Center Street in Old Town.

After the parade in Manassas, Santa will pop over to Haymarket to help ring in the season there at the town's annual Haymarket Holiday Party, which runs from 3 to 5 p.m. The party is free and open to the public and will include the ceremonial lighting of the town Christmas tree. The Haymarket festivities will be held at Haymarket Town Hall, 15000 Washington St.

For those who need to pack still more Christmas spirit into their weekend, the Old Town Manassas merchants will host their annual Merchants Open House from 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Santa will be back again and most stores will be offering refreshments.

The annual Gingerbread House submissions will also be on display in the shop windows and individuals can vote for their favorite entry in the stores. Free horse-drawn carriage rides will be available from 1:30p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec.5 and again on Sunday, Dec.12.
