Police: driver is here illegally
Police said Monday that the driver arrested in Sunday’s fatal DUI crash is an illegal immigrant.
Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, 23, of Merrymont Lane in Bristow, was charged with drunken driving offenses after he allegedly crashed into a car carrying three nuns from the Benedictine Monastery on Linton Hall Road.
One of the sisters was killed; the other two are in serious condition.
“It has been determined that he is here illegally,” Officer Jonathan Perok said on Monday. “He was out on a detainer by ICE when the accident occurred.”
ICE, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, handles immigration offenses.
The crash occurred around 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, at Bristow Road near Wright Lane in Bristow. Police said Montano was traveling south on Bristow Road in a 1997 Subaru Outback when he left the road, struck the guardrail on the right side and then crossed into the northbound lane. He hit the jersey wall and then rammed the nuns’ 2003 Toyota Corolla head-on.
Jeanette Marie Mosier, 66, a resident of the monastery, was riding in the back seat and died at the scene. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The 75-year-old driver and 70-year-old front-seat passenger, also residents of the monastery, were flown out with “severe” injuries.
Perok said on Monday that the two might make full recoveries after surgery but that they were seriously injured and recovery isn’t certain.
“Just because of their age and the injuries, it could go either way,” he said.
Montano was also flown out with non-life-threatening injuries. He was charged with his third driving under the influence offense in five years, involuntary manslaughter and a felony count of driving on license revoked for DUI offenses.
Perok said it is likely he will also be charged with additional immigration offenses.
