Gainesville playwright prepares for state championships
Greg Powell of Gainesville can add “award-winning playwright” to his list of accomplishments.
On June 28, his one-act play, “The Garden of Eden; The True Underdog Story of Peoplekind” took the prize for Best Original Script in the Northern Virginia Theater Alliance One Act Festival.
This weekend, he'll be competing for the title of state champion.
At the regional competition, the play won Best Overall Production, and McCall Noelle Doyle of Manassas won in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her role of Eve.
Ted Ballard of Manassas was nominated for Best Actor for his role of God, and Brian Doyle of Manassas was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role of Adam. In addition, the play won a Judge’s Discretionary Award for the set’s Tree of Knowledge.
“Sitting in the audience and hearing their reaction was amazing,” said Lori Muhlstein, who was nominated for Best Director.
“Lori took the play beyond my wildest expectations,” said Powell. The cast came together as a great ensemble and brought the play to life.”
As the winners of the festival, they are headed to the Virginia Theater Alliance (VTA) state-wide competition, which will be held during the day on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Centreville High School.
The winner of VTA goes on the the Southeast Theater Conference (SECT) in Lexington, Ken. in early 2010.
“All three judges were effusive; one even commented that Greg should keep on writing and take the show on the road,” said Muhlstein.

“Come see the play and experience the ominipotence,” suggested Powell.
