Millbrook rocks Brentsville 41-20 at homecoming

Brentsville District's winless woes continued last Friday at homecoming in Nokesville as the visiting Millbrook Pioneers scored seven touchdown points before halftime in a 41-20 win.

Millbrook (4-3) maximized its efficiency offensively on the rainy night by bombarding the Tigers (0-7) on land and air. Quarterback Curtis Daily tossed two touchdowns in the first quarter and one more right before half time while the Pioneers also rushed for two second quarter TDs and scooped up a fumble recovery for a 49-yard score.

"We knew they were going into a long I [formation]. We were trying to figure out how to stop that and we didn't have any luck in the first half, but in the second half, it looked like we did," said the Tigers' Cole Farmer.

"They just came out with more intensity, more fire than we did," added BDHS running back David Hammond (18-157, 1 rush TD, 1 pass TD).

The Pioneers contained the star junior back for the better part of three quarters before Hammond devastated Millbrook's second-string in the fourth quarter. After a Millbrook fumble brought possession back to the Tigers on their own 7 yard line, Hammond busted out a 93-yard dash by cutting through a gap on his right. He ran unimpeded the whole way, drawing no contact after he passed the line of scrimmage.

"The whole was wide open. They broke it open for me," said Hammond, crediting his offensive line. "The opposite side running back sealed his man, so I had a chance to hit the corner. I just dipped out."

That was the second time in the fourth quarter Hammond lit up the Millbrook defense for a score. About a minute and a half into the final period, he outstretched his arms at the Millbrook 25 yard line and somehow clenched the wet pass thrown by quarterback KC Willard (3-5 passing, 75 yards, 1 TD). He slanted left and blazed a trail to the end zone, completing the 48-yard score. That setting up a Cole Farmer extra point that put Brentsville on the board for the first time, down 41-7.

According to Farmer, what changed for Brentsville in the second half was when former three-year starting quarterback PJ Borko (Class of 2009) addressed the players in the locker room at half time.

He said the primary message was that they needed to show some leadership on the field.

"I really feel like we picked up the intensity in the second half and if it was their first string, we would have come out with the same intensity and knocked it in," said Farmer.

Hammond added that Borko "was basically chewing us out, telling us we (were) playing soft."

The third quarter sped by quickly as the continuous clock was put in motion. At the high school level, the clock runs non-stop when a team leads by 35 or more points.

Hammond's first touchdown brought the score within a 34-point margin and a second-and-goal rush by Austin Trenum closed the margin to 41-14 with 5:40 left on the clock.

"Our line was getting driven back at first but they really come out in the second half and proved themselves," said Farmer.
