Brentsville girls, Battlefield boys crack top five at Octoberfest
The numbers do not sound that impressive: 14th, 23rd, 33rd, 77th, 86th.But in a field of well over 300 runners, statistics that low helped the Brentsville District girls Group A varsity cross country team finish in third place out of 46 finishing teams this past Saturday at the Octoberfest Invitational in The Plains.
Allison Bartels led the charge for the Tigers as usual, with a top-20 finish of 19:12. That was just 1:03 behind winner Kaitlyn Davis of Mountain View.
The upperclass strength continued for Brentsville through the roster as junior Morgan Price listed the team's second-best showing at 19:28.
Senior Caitlyn Hoffman posted Brentsville's third-best time of 19:54.
Junior Jill Mariano and senior Jessica Gausmann's rounded out Brentsville's top five.
The Battlefield girls meanwhile, took a completely different approach as freshmen led the way during the Bobcats' 16th-place finish.
Nicole Carter came in only 12 seconds behind Bartles of Brentsville, solidifying 18th-place for her among runners whose scores counted in a team total.
After junior Megan Pyle's 69th-place finish (20:36), there was another freshman to bring in the lower points for Battlefield with Hannah Schwennsen clocking in at 21:22.
Two juniors rounded out Battlefield's top-five: Kirsten Fling and Claire Olsen.
For the boys, Battlefield and Brentsville basically reversed roles; the Bobcats finished fifth and Brentsville came in 15th.
Bobcat senior Darren Driscoll posted the only top-20 finish for any Cedar Run District or Prince William County runner after clocking in at 16:21. His senior teammate Garrick Clemente managed to crack the top 50 as well in a field of 336 team runners, by earning 43rd place (16:47).
Battlefield mixed senior and freshman talent for their remaining scores with seniors Kyle Moller and Nathan Moyer checking in at 54th and 73rd. Freshman Conner Lee finished in 17:12, good enough for 78th place.
Brentsville's Matt Earman was one of three Tiger runners to crack the top 100 as the junior matched Lee's time of 17:12. Sophomore Steve Filler ended up 90th (17:21) and senior Corey Scott checked in just behind him at 17:23.
Senior Jared Broemmel and sophomore Gabe Lassiter completed the Tigers' top five.
