15-year-old charged in serial attacks on women
A 15-year-old has been charged with a string of seemingly-random attacks on women in Manassas.Prince William police officers announced that the 15-year-old Manassas boy was arrested on Nov. 3 around 7 p.m.
According to Officer Erika Hernandez, a spokesperson for the police department, a member of the boy's family called police just before 6 p.m. to report an incident. Hernandez said police are not releasing information about why the police were called, but while Officer George Kimball was at the home meeting with the family, a broadcast came across his radio.
The broadcast told officers to be on the lookout for a man who had just assaulted a woman in the Coverstone Drive area and it gave a description of the assailant. The description matched the 15-year-old Kimball was talking with at the time and after an investigation, the boy was arrested.
The teen was charged with three counts of abduction, five counts of malicious wounding, one count of sexual battery and one count of attempted rape for a string of attacks dating back to August.
On Aug. 26 at 7:17 a.m., police were called to Hiram Court in Manassas, where a 32-year-old woman was assaulted. She told police that she was walking her dog on Coverstone Drive when the suspect followed her, knocked her down and started to hit her. She yelled for help and the suspect fled the scene when people came out to help her.
About six weeks later, two attacks were reported on the same day. Around 6:30 a.m. Oct. 6, a woman was attacked in the 10900 block of Coverstone Drive. Police said she had been walking through a path between the shopping center and the apartment building complexes when the suspect grabbed her, punched her and attempted to sexually assault her. The 25-year-old victim was treated at the hospital for a broken nose, a laceration to her left leg and several abrasions.
Later that night, around 9 p.m., another woman was attacked in the 7500 block of Clemson Court in Manassas. The victim was sitting her car and the suspect opened the car door, punched her in the face and tried to drag her out of the car. She fought the suspect and was able to get away.
Four days later, the attacker struck again. On Oct. 30, police were called to an apartment building on Keara Court around noon. The 36-year-old victim said she'd been walking in the area of the stairs when she was attacked from behind. The suspect grabbed her by the neck and threw her against the wood railing. She fought back and yelled for help and the suspect ran from the scene.
The final attack happened on Nov. 3 and led to the suspect's arrest. Around 6 p.m., a 36-year-old woman waved down an officer at Coverstone Drive and Aaron Drive. She reported that she was walking through Barron Park when she was attacked from behind. The suspect began punching and biting her but she fought him off, freed herself and called police. She was treated for her injuries at the hospital.
According to Hernandez, the suspect is enrolled in an area school, although police are not specifying which one.
First Sgt. Kim Chinn, another police spokesperson, said he will likely be evaluated for mental illness.
