Make it three: Battlefield softball clinches return to states
The spring sports season is officially the most successful in Battlefield history as the softball team joined the baseball and girls lacrosse teams as state-bound with a 10-1 win over Halifax Thursday night.
Senior ace Brittany Black struck out 13 in a complete-game performance during the Northwest Region semi-finals while the Battlefield line-up brought in runs consistently throughout the game. The victory over Halifax came as a redemption of sorts from the 2007 season when Halifax came up to Haymarket and defeated Battlefield 1-0 in the regional semi-finals.
Battlefield is the defending state runner-up and, like in 2008, won the Cedar Run District regular season and tournament titles. The Bobcats are set to play the winner of the Loudoun Valley-Franklin County game Saturday in the region finals. Even though the Bobcats have officially claimed a spot in the state tournament, a win would ensure that they host a first-round game in Haymarket. They will host the Vikings if Loudoun Valley wins and head to Franklin County if the Eagles win.
