Battlefield clinches second state berth
Battlefield's baseball sluggers joined the girls lacrosse team as the second state-bound squad from the Haymarket high school with a win Wednesday night in the regional semi-finals. A win by the softball team tonight would clinch Battlefield's third state berth of the spring, a school record for a single season.
The baseball team defeated Halifax on the road 6-3 May 27 to secure a trip to the Northwest Region championship, set to be held Friday night at Stafford as the Indians downed Hylton last night 9-3. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Even with a loss on Wednesday, the Battlefield girls lacrosse team is still headed for states. The Bobcats played surprisingly tough against Loudoun Valley, the second-ranked team in Virginia. The Vikings beat their Cedar Run District rival Battlefield 9-6 at home in Purcellville. The state tournament begins for Battlefield on Saturday, May 30 when the girls head up to Ashburn to take on host Broad Run at 2:30 p.m.
Battlefield can send a third team to states tonight if the softball team defeats the winner of Hylton and Halifax. Bad field conditions due to rain delayed the teams' quarter-final match for the third day in a row on Wednesday, forcing the two teams to play at Battlefield at 3 p.m. today. The winner will then spar with the host-Bobcats as the second part of a double-header. That game is expected to start at 6 p.m.
