Farmer's markets are open for the season
Spring is here and the smell of fresh produce is in the air. Beginning this month, Farmer's Markets are in full swing at several locations throughout Prince William County.
Gainesville
The Gainesville Farmer's Market is one of the newer markets in the county. Held each Thursday at the Marque at Heritage Hunt, the Gainesville Farmer's Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and coffee.
"We just started last week," said Roberta Corgnati, community manager for the Marque.
So far, she said, things are going well. The market features fresh fruit and vegetables, sold by Garner's Produce from Westmoreland County. Wild Mountain Honey and Hondo Coffee Company, both from Manassas, also set up shop at the market and Grace's Pastry of Vienna offers fresh baked goods.
Corgnati said more vendors will be signing on as the season progresses. The Gainesville Farmer's Market runs from 2 to 6 p.m. each Thursday through October at 13550 Heathcote Blvd. Call (703) 754-7711 for details.
Haymarket
The Haymarket Farmer's Market features farm-fresh produce from Shirley Jones of J and J Greenhouse. The Haymarket Farmer's Market is located in the Haymarket Museum parking lot at 15025 Washington St. The market is held each Saturday through October from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For details, call Haymarket Town Hall at (703) 753-2600.
Nokesville
In Nokesville, the farmer's market is run by Pablo Teodoro, a self-described farmers’ activist who has a farm of his own in Nokesville.
The Nokesville Farmer's Market features canned goods, baked goods, animals for petting, crafts and, of course, fresh produce.
This year, the market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday, May 23 through September. The market will close down for the season after September but will reopen for one day only on Oct. 17 during Brunswick Stew Day.
The market is located at the intersection of Fitzwater Drive and Route 28 in Nokesville. For details, call Teodoro at (703) 794-7057 or visit www.farmfoody.org/profile/nokesvillefm.
Manassas
One of the area's largest markets is in Old Town Manassas. Sponsored by Historic Manassas, Inc., the market is held on Thursdays and Saturdays through October.
Debbie Haight of Historic Manassas Inc. said this year, about 20 vendors are taking part.
"They are all local to the area," she said, adding that in addition to the standard fruits, vegetables and plants, shoppers can also find pastries, salsa, honey, soap and even meat and eggs.
The market is held on Thursdays at the Harris Pavilion located at the corner of Center Street and West Street from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Thursday market is strictly for vendors within a 200-miles radius of Manassas who sell their own produce and products.
On Saturday, the market is held in the parking lot located at the corner of West Street and Prince William Street from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This market is also open to non-producers who purchase products from an authorized food source or wholesaler.

The Dale City market includes produce, sorbet, nuts, coffee, soap, lotion and baked goods and is located in the Dale City Commuter Lot at Dale Boulevard and Center Plaza. For details, call (703) 670-7115.
