Battlefield, Brentsville teams capture district crowns

Sports teams from Battlefield and Brentsville District High Schools posted excellent showings this week, capturing several regular-season district titles.

District winners are as follows:

Battlefield
-The Bobcats softball team clinched the Cedar Run District title with a win over Loudoun Valley on Thursday. Sporting a record of 18-1, the girls ended the regular season with a team battling average of .397 and a collective ERA of 0.40 (Usual starter Brittany Black, who has pitched 82 percent of all innings, has an even smaller ERA of 0.28). They earned a No. 1 seed in the district tournament and are set to host No. 8-seed Culpeper Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.

-Battlefield's boys outdoor track team meanwhile brought home the gold in the Cedar Run District championship on Wednesday with a resounding 120-89 win over second-place Fauquier. Leading the boys were individual titlists James Sun (110 meter hurdles), the 4x400 meter relay team of Matt Shaughnessy, Ross Forry, Everett Drew and Sebastian Paniagua, and shot putter Tyler Smith.
The girls team finished just six points out of first place, earning a second-place title to champion Osbourn Park 135-129. Nikkisha Walker (110 meter hurdles), Virginia Hill (300 meter hurdles), Shannon Anderson (high jump), Brea Zeise (pole vault), Breannah Settle (shot put), and the 4x800 meter relay team of Marina Capalbo, Dani Crabtree, Megan Pyles and Alexis Sunderland all won individual events for the Bobcats. The Northwest Regional track meet is Friday, May 22 in Charlottesville.

-Also closing the regular season with a win over Loudoun Valley was the girls soccer team, which defeated the Vikings 2-1 on Thursday. The Bobcat girls (13-2-1), winners of 11 in a row, outscored their opposition 48-16 this season en route to securing the Cedar Run District title. Top-seeded Battlefield hosts No. 8 seed Culpeper Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the district tournament. Like the softball team, the girls soccer team is vying to return to the state title game for the second year in a row. Both teams last year finished as runners up in closely-fought contests.

Brentsville District
-The Lady Tigers brought home another outdoor track title on Wednesday, defeating second-place squad and host team Millbrook 123-80.33. Senior Danyelle Kent-Robinson captured Brentsville's only solo title of the day by winning the 200 meter dash and the girls 4x800 meter relay team consisting of Kelsi Ostergren, Caitlin Hoffman, Maggie Gentry and Morgan Price delivered a first-place showing as a group. The boys team meanwhile finished tied for third place. Regions are May 22.

-Brentsville's boys soccer team hosts the first round of the Northwestern District quarterfinals tonight against No. 8 seed Skyline after finishing the regular season with a first-place, 15-1 showing to capture the Northwestern District crown. The Tiger boys wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday night by defeating Warren County 2-1.

-As hard as topping a 15-1 record may be, the girls soccer team managed to one-up the boys with a perfect 16-0 record. No other team came even close to the Tigers as second-seeded Sherando finished with a 13-2-1 record. Brentsville is vying to return to states for the first time since 2007 and its regular season Northwestern District championship guarantees the Tigers a trip back to regions, where it exited unexpectedly early last year.

-Brentsville has the chance to bring back its fourth regular season title tonight when the baseball team battles Sherando for sole-possession of first place in a tie-breaker. Both teams sport 13-3 records and the winner is not only guaranteed home-field advantage throughout the Northwestern District tournament, but an automatic berth to states with a home-field game in the quarterfinals.

Other notable achievments this week came from the Brentsville softball team, which finished second in the Northwestern District and the Battlefield girls lacrosse team, which earned second-place in the Cedar Run District for the second year in a row.
