BD's Kent-Robinson takes first, SJ's Thigpen second at states

It's just not a state championship with a Brentsville District representative of some sort vying for a shot at the title.

In the Group AA indoor track and field finals on Saturday in Lynchburg, senior Danyelle Kent-Robinson put on quite a show as she does year in and year out, winning the high jump with a bound of 5-feet, 4-inches.

Her jump not only crushed the competition, but qualified her for nationals as well in her second event of the day as she also earned a trip to Boston in the 55 meter hurdles by coming in fourth place with a national-qualifying time of 8.54 second. Oddly enough, she missed out on her own state record, set on March 3, 2007 when topped the standings with a performance of 8.48 seconds.

Brentsville's girls team as a whole performed particularly well, tying Brookville and Dave Spring for third place overall (26 points). The girls produced a handful of other top-10 finishers as well including the second-place 4x800 squad, Mariama Bello earning sixth in the shot-put and Kelsi Ostergren nabbing the ninth spot in the 500 meter dash while Sarah Earman came less than half a second away of a top-10 performance of her own by finishing 12th in the 1,000 meter run. Frehsman Madison Smith also earned fifteenth in the 300 meter dash.

As for the boys, senior Erik Kelly snatched the biggest win of the day with a bronze in the 300 meter dash by clocking in at 36.64 seconds, 0.05 seconds better than his seeded time.

Meanwhile in Group AAA action, Stonewall's perrenial all-star proved his merit once again by coming up just short of capturing another 300 meter dash victory with a time of 34.54 seconds. It put the Stonewall senior 0.47 seconds behind first place finisher James Taylor, who came within 0.28 seconds of Anthony Wheeler's 16-year state record.
Like Taylor, Thigpen had also been slated to complete in the 55 meter dash, which Taylor won. But Thigpen opted out of that event and concentrated on the 300, which he won last year in the outdoor state finals.

The UCLA-bound track and football star was not along this time around as fellow Raiders Kevin Parks, Darryl Gaines and Aron Long competed along side him in the 4x200 meter dash. The Stonewall squad of three seniors and a freshman (Long) ended up in eighth place in an extremely competitive event with a time of 1:33.80. That was only 1.79 seconds behind first-place Grassfield (1:32.09).

No other teams from Prince William County competed in the 4x200 as Forest Park ended up disqualified.
Parks ended up securing some extra honors of his own on the day as he lept 43 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump, propelling the senior to ninth place. Battlefield junior David Burnham also earned a spot in states for that event and he finished in 22nd place, jumping 40-10.00.

The best Battlefield finish of the day went to short-distance sprinter Genevieve Johnson. The junior earned eighth place in the 55 meter dash by crossing the finish line in 7.23 seconds. She managed to make the final cut of 12 after posting a ninth-place time of 7.26 in the preliminary round, putting her just 0.02 seconds behind freshman Olicia Sharp of Bethel.

One other Bobcats cracked the top 10 on the day as Brea Zeise's pole vault jump of 9-feet put her tied for tenth.

Battlefield runners also earned eleventh place in two events: Sebastian Paniagua in the 500 meter run dash and Byron Sintim in the long jump.
