Residential sprinkler and smoke detector save a local family and their home
On, Sunday, July 26 at 9:02 a.m., 18 fire and rescue units involving 33 personnel responded to a 3 story garden apartment fire located at 13000 Patamon Way in Woodbridge.Upon arrival at the scene, fire and rescue units discovered the fire had been extinguished by the activation of 1 sprinkler head located in the kitchen of the apartment. Fire and rescue units noticed there was little to no fire damage to the kitchen, the origin of the fire. Evidence of a light smoke stain on the ceiling and the stove’s range hood indicated fire had occurred in this area.
All occupants, 1 adult and 2 children, had successfully evacuated the apartment.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was extinguished due to the presence and activation of a residential sprinkler. In addition, a smoke alarm alerted the residents and the fire department that fire was present in the apartment. The presence of both, a residential sprinkler and a smoke detector, enabled the residents to escape the home safely.
According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, a cooking fire occurred in the kitchen caused by a pot of oil left unattended on the back of the stove. The fire has been determined accidental.
