County to spray for cankerworms
Through early May, Prince William County Public Works is conducting aerial suppression for fall cankerworm populations on Bull Run Mountain. The treatment area, or spray block, will encompass 304 acres. The treatment area includes the following roads, either in whole or in part: Mountain Road, Ridge Road, Youngs Drive, Gore Drive, Painter Ct., Summit Drive, Oak Lane, Hickory Lane, Wakefield Court, Nelson Drive, Mercer Road and Duffey Drive.Spraying can take a few days depending upon weather conditions and may continue over the weekend. Residents should expect noise from a low-flying helicopter during the spray application. Residents and pets should stay indoors during the spray application and for 30 to 45 minutes after the spraying is complete and the helicopter is no longer visible.
An EPA-approved insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki, is used in the aerial suppression. Spraying must be timed with appropriate leaf and caterpillar development in order to be effective.
The fall cankerworm is a forest pest that attacks deciduous trees and shrubs, causing defoliation that can lead to tree mortality. For fall cankerworm questions, contact the Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control office at (703) 792-6279, or call the fall cankerworm hotline at (703) 792-4636 and listen for the fall cankerworm prompts; or visit the Prince William County Web site at www.pwcgov.org.
