House overrides triggerman veto
1:30 p.m.
The House of Delegates has overridden the governor's veto of the triggerman rule.
Current law states that only the person who actually commits a murder can be sentenced to the death penalty; accomplices cannot be executed. The General Assembly passed a law overturning that rule but Gov. Tim Kaine vetoed it.
On Wednesday, the House of Delegates voted 69-30 to override Kaine's veto. The measure must still be approved by two-thirds of the Senate if the override is to stand. That vote is expected later in the day.
The House of Delegates also voted to override Kaine's veto of a bill to allow military personnel to buy more than one gun a month. That bill will also be taken up by the state Senate later in the day.
